Media Literacy: decoding advertisements


Grade level: Cycle 2, Year 2
Subject: Media Literacy
Duration: 1.5 hours

Professional Development Goal:
By using a Quick Write students will become accustomed to different teaching and learning techniques that they can use individually.

Objectives:
Students will realize how often that the media that they see are forms of advertisements. They will understand the strategies used in creating advertisements and demonstrate this through the creation of their own advertisements.   

QEP Competency:
Media Literacy: Awareness of the Place and Influence of the Media in His/Her Daily Life and in Society  

Cross-Curricular Competency:
To Use Creativity

Materials and preparation necessary:
-         Various Movie Posters
-         Information of Advertising Strategies

Step-by-step procedures:
-         Ask students to write a Quick Write on all the forms of advertisements they have seen in the last two days.
-         Discuss with the class all the forms of media they have seen in the last forty-eight hours. Question why, and how advertisements seem to be everywhere.
-         Discuss techniques and strategies used in creating advertisements.
-         Place students in groups and have each group analyze one movie advertisement that will be provided to them.
-         Share the results with the entire class.
-         Allow students to start creating an advertisement for their favourite movie. 

Assessment/Evaluation
Students will be assessed on their ability to participate during classroom and group discussions.
Their advertisement will be assessed based on the techniques they used in order to make it appealing and captivating.  

Reflection
- Explain the role that each student in a group plays. Ex: The speaker, the secretary, the timekeeper.
- Ask students at the end of the lesson whether or not they will be more critical of the media that surrounds them.
